Padgett Museum Accession & Acquisition Policy

DEFINITION: “Accessioning” is the process of creating a permanent record of an object, assemblage, or lot received from one source at one time
    for which the Padgett Museum has custody, right, or title, and assigning a unique control number to said object, assembly, or lot.

The Padgett Museum is owned and operated by the Floyd County Historical Society (FCHS), a 501(c)(3) corporation.
The restrictions and liabilities attributed to the museum shall apply to the Society as well.


General
    The museum is a house museum with limited display and storage space.
    The museum cannot pay for objects.
    Objects in collections are covered by insurance.  Objects destroyed, damaged, or lost may not be replaced.  The museum assumes no responsibility to the donor.
    The museum will accept donations subject to the critera below.
       The rights of Indigenous Peoples and other populations may affect the collectibility of objects.

Additions to collections
    Relevance - must fall within our mission statement
    Title - donor must have clear title for the object
    Storage - The museum must have the capability to store and care for objects.
    Confidentiality - Items accepted may be donated anonymously.

Display of items
    Space being limited, the Museum shall have sole discretion as to how items are displayed.

Access to Items
    The museum is an all volunteer organization.  Requests to view or otherwise access objects are subject to staff availability.
    Copying and photographing objects that are not copyrighted may be permitted at the discretion of the the Society's board.

Lending and Borrowing of items of items
    The board of directors of the Floyd County Historical Society may authorize the temporary removal of a cataloged object.
       The minutes of the Society shall reflect the time, duration, and circumstances of the loan.
    Objects may be borrowed for storage or display only after considering the attendant liabilty to the Society.
       The minutes of the Society shall document the transaction.

    Donation to other entities
    Sale
    Destruction
    Return to Donor
  The catalog entry shall be updated and retained to reflect the object's deposition.

Modification of this Policy
   The board of directors of the Floyd County Historical Society may, as necessary, modify this policy.
